Duvel Golden Ale: The Campagne of Beers
Duvel beer is wildly considered to be one of the finest beers around the world. The family owned brewery Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat produces this Belgian beer. The beer is produced with finest ingredients from around Europe: Yeast from Scotland, Czech Hops, and Belgian natural spring water. The beer itself has been described as the champagne of beers with rich flavor with hints of spices and bitter hops. Duvel packs a punch with its high alcohol content of 8.5%. If you have not tried this beer and you are a fan of quality beers, you owe it to yourself to do so.

Leffe : Premium Belgian Beer
Monks at the abbey Notre Dame de Leffe produced the Belgian Beer ‘Leffe’ for hundreds of years.  Monks at the abbey no longer produce the ‘Abbey beer’ however it has more or less retained its rich taste.  The huge corporation InBev now produces Leffe, InBev also produces such other great beers as HoegaardenThere are several different types of Leffe Beer:

Leffe Blonde which dry and fruity
Leffe Brune  - slightly fruity and dark
Leffe Triple – “rich taste…hints of orange, vanilla, and lemon’
Leffe Radieuse – strong beer with a fruity taste.
Leffe Vielle Cuvée – strong and creamy beer with a slight fruity taste

Like most Belgian beers Leffe should be drank in a chalice shaped beer.  I have only tasted Leffe Blonde, Brune, and Triple, all three of which are excellent.  I must say that Brune is my favorite it’s a strong beer but its taste is not overwhelming.

Château Clos des Menuts in Saint-Emilion
The little French village Saint-Emilion and its wine growing regions are situated in the south west of the country.  While walking through the streets of Saint-Emilion I had the chance to check out the wine cellar of the Château Clos des Menuts. I had the opportunity to taste several bottles all of which were good however their year 2000 red was amazing and so I picked up a bottle. However, I was told the wine would not hit its peak until the year 2008 so I will be drinking it then.

Carré Saône

Sunday, March 12, 2006

If you happen to find yourself in Lyon France anytime soon and are craving meat consider going to Carré Saône.   The restaurant offers beef dishes at fairly reasonable prices between 21 and 45 € for a Menu including entrée main dish and desert.   The Proportions are big (you will be well fed at the end of your meal).   A wine list is available with wines reaching astronomical levels however the table wine is excellent at 9 euros for 75cl of Côtes du Rhône.   Getting a table should normally not be a problem midweek but reservations should be made if you plan on visiting this popular eatery on the weekend.   In terms of the ambiance of the place it offer unassuming décor in a cozy setting overlooking the Saône Rvier.   Every meal ends with a free digestif, Calvados, an apple Brandy from Northern France.
